I just wanted to confirm that we are increasing the salary cap by 5% and not 10%. Is that correct?

I think it was 5. I forget if we were doing it in a step of 2.5 then 5 but we weren’t going to 10.

Ok. I don't remember. I would propose going up the full 5% given the unexpected flat cap. But I can live with either.

Will confer with the mod team. Some of them have good memories. I recall there being a fairly good percentage of GMs wanting to stick with the NHL cap...

Since we generally follow league rules, shouldn’t we be holding back at increasing the cap?

If memory serves, the poll from last year showed that a majority of GMs wanted a cap increase relative to the NHL cap, but was divided between 5% and 10%, with 5% holding the plurality of votes.
We wouldn't, if I understand correctly, be changing the base cap, so the 5% would be on the NHL's cap regardless of whether it grows, holds, or retracts.
Jump in to confirm or correct me in this.

Mods are still conferring with a couple of those with better memories but so far we think the vote was pretty even with those wanting to leave at the NHL cap than to increase. I know the max increase was 5% as I recall I was willing to support an extra 4million but no more.

I know the max increase was 5% as I recall I was willing to support an extra 4million but no more. I recall “the minor increase” a vote or two ahead of “no change”. There was one GM (maybe Anaheim?) who submitted a comment that he originally voted for the minor increase but changed his mind to no increase. I was never sure if that was reflected in the totals. There. I just muddied the waters just a wee bit more.

Based on today’s signings, I stand by the cap remaining flat.

The problems with our cap have nothing to do with what’s going on in the NHL tho. It has to do with the distortion created when we contracted. It matters nothing what happens with the NHL. Well, other than NHL expansion, which increases the distortion effect.

Well, other than NHL expansion, which increases the distortion effect. Agree to disagree. You’re always going to have those players in free agency that make way too much and don’t point produce to their cap. When an injury goes down, then that said player will get picked up to help point produce for a couple of weeks.

I don't think it's a philosophical issue. We agreed to lift the cap last year. As a result, I made decisions accordingly. I am probably not the only one. So it's bad faith to reverse course at this point.

There very clearly were more people who selected to increase it than not, but they were split between 5% and 10%
If it comes down to it we can simply hold another poll

That’s what I asked for at the time. A second poll with only one option for a cap increase percentage so that the vote wouldn’t be split. The poll as it was constructed was skewed in favour of no increase.

So it's bad faith to reverse course at this point. Assuming a 5% bump, it doesn’t really matter whether it’s added or not. All that buys you is about 4/5s of a TJ Brodie, so that shouldn’t skew plans much. The league was contracted by 20%, so 5% doesn’t correct anything.

We don’t need the voting. Last year we had more who wanted an increase and the most votes was 5%. We had a large number of people who didn’t want an increase therefore 5% is the max.
We’ve had years at the cap and 24 teams and it hasn’t been a problem for many and lots view it as a challenge. Some recent contracts have been really high which causes pressure therefore I’m willing to support a 5% increase. We can review after a season or two and determine if a change is needed.
