Tkachuk at least told them he was leaving and gave them an opportunity to get a return. And it is quite a haul they got!
With Huberdeau and Weegar, they should stay competitive. If they can resign Huberdeau or even both players, this could be a huge win for the Flames. The salary of both players combined is the less than what Tkachuk is getting paid for this season.
I love Tkachuk, but last season was an outlier. I think he is unlikely to continue to score at that rate. Huberdeau? He has several seasons in a row above a point per game. He is consistently scoring no matter the line mates.
Adding Weegar, the Right side is now crowded with Andersson, Tanev, and Kylington. This tells me either Tanev is still hurt or they may be looking to trade Kylington to free up more cap space.

I’m not a Tkachuk fan. I was scared shitless they were going to sign him, make him captain and build the team identity around him. You don’t build a team identity around a weasel. So I’m beyond thrilled with this trade. I don’t think they should sign Huberdeau though. Signing him to a retirement contract would be a mistake. If he’ll take under $10m with 5 or 6 years of term, front loaded, then sure. $10m x 5 years would be okay, but he’s rightfully going to want $10m plus with 7-8 yrs of term. I’d rather they flip him to Montreal for fun and profit…if he even wants to go there. Not all French people are in love with Montreal. My grandfather was one such.
I’ll miss Johnny, but I have no hard feelings towards him. I think he truly wanted to stay in Calgary and was deluded enough to think he could change his wife’s and his mother’s minds right up to the last minute. That was naive of him, but I think he’s just not very bright or mature. He should have manned up and told the Flames a year ago he wasn’t allowed to stay in Calgary for family reasons.
I was sad to see Gio leave, but it was the right thing to do. The slide had started even though he was only two years past a Norris. Better to lose Gio and his cap hit than Kylington, who is who we’d have likely lost instead.
As for the D depth 5 years ago, I’d rather have what we have today. Gio was at his prime and we don’t have anyone like him, although I really like Weegar. I think he instantly becomes our best d-man. Otherwise, 5 years ago we had Brodie, who I’ve always thought was overrated, Hamilton, who keeps getting passed around the league for some reason, Hamonic, who is a pig, Kulak, who is meh, and Stone, who we still have. That group as a whole turned out to be overrated. I’d rather have our current group…Weegar, Tanev, Andersson, Hanifin, Kylington, Zadorov plus Mackey/Valimaki/Stone/Poirier

Kylington played LD last year I still think Sutter would rather have him at RD so his stick is on the proper side. I don’t think Sutter trusted the other options available. The reason he is expendable is Mackey is kicking the door in and needs a spot…and you just signed Zadorov and you need a big man somewhere in the lineup back there…and Kylington needs a new contract (along with Mangiapane). I still think odds are Tree deals him.

If they can get a decent young F for Kylington I’m down for that. If they find a sucker to give a 1st I’d do that as well. Maybe they can get a decent young F and a 2nd. After seeing this Tkachuk deal the limits on what is feasible have been pushed way out there. Clearly there are more Mike Milburys and Dim Bennings out there.
