This was brewing for a bit. Hunter was interested in having a Vancouver player that he likes to follow. I had Pettersson, and you all know that I wanted to keep him for as long as I could. But, I value GMs enjoying themselves in this league. So, I told him we could figure out a deal after the GM mini draft. Mods, everyone, feel free to say if this is a fair trade, especially for a new GM that is just beginning to be a part of this league.
To Dallas:
Elias Pettersson
Devon Toews
2020 1st PP (WAS) --> 20th OA
2020 2nd PP (WPG) --> 42nd OA
2021 1st PP (LA)
Marc Michaelis
To Los Angeles:
Cale Makar
Rielly Smith
2020 1st PP (DAL) --> 6th OA
2020 2nd PP (DAL) --> 30th OA
Ville Meskanen
This is LA's rationale: Hunter said himself that he didn't really care much for the 2020 draft and that he'd be willing to trade down picks if he got his guy. I needed a franchise player back in Makar, who will probably produce less than Pettersson for the most part (since centers generally produce more points). Devon Toews and Rielly Smith offset the forward and D transaction with the franchise players, and it also offsets the salary difference between Pettersson and Makar.
Pettersson > Makar and D. Toews < R. Smith
Now onto the picks. Dallas was willing to move down a little bit if they got compensated for it. The difference with those picks in my view was a 1st round pick, in which Hunter agreed to accept my 2021 1st round prospect pick so he can gauge those prospects better. Hunter also got an upgraded prospect (he chose to throw in Meskanen).
Overall, a big deal, but Hunter got his guy. I get my 2020 picks. I have to keep upgrading picks because the freaking GMs around here always steal my guys (Hugh and Lyle, I'm talking to you! Lol)
Again, I don't mean to take advantage of anyone. I'm trying to be as fair as I can without gutting my own team. But, overall, I feel like Hunter has himself set up well with Pettersson as hi franchise C and Dahlin as his franchise D.
