Apparently sports writer Sheng Peng floated the idea of the Sharks and Erik Karlsson mutually agreeing to terminate his contract so he could become a free agent. The idea being that his contract was front loaded and he has been paid out most of it already.
I doubt he would walk away from guaranteed money. I mean technically he has been paid out most of the contract, but he still does have $39m owing over the next 4 seasons. That is $9.25m per year.
Does he think anyone would be willing to give him a 4 year $39m contract? …until he is 38 years old? …when the team has trouble finding a taker at $11.5m now?
I think it is an interesting idea, but no way the player agrees to it.
On the flip side, would it also mean the NHL would hit the Sharks with a cap hit adjustment for the “over pay” in the first four seasons? He would have already been paid $14m more in real dollars than his cap hit. There would have to be an annual $3.5m cap hit for the next four years or (gulp) a one time hit of $14m!
Anyone know how this works?

Ooh, and would any of that adjustment hit the Senators? I know when the Oilers were trying to find a creative way to get Duncan Keith off the books, there were scenarios where the Hawks would have been hit with an adjustment and there was nothing they could do about it.
