Hi GMs,
I’m going to start the free agent draft in a week, August 26.
I originally had a later date in mind however that was before the NHL schedule came out. I want to ensure GMs have ample time post draft to get under the cap, and post draft trades, and adjust rosters based on NHL training camps. I felt starting the draft post Labour day was going to potentially cut things too close. Plus, I am away dealing with family stuff in September and want the draft to start while I’m still here to make sure things go smoothly and not 8 hours in the future.
We will initially start with 12 hour time limits and adjust if required. The timer will pause between 9pm and 9am mountain effectively giving a GM 24 hours to pick. You may, and are encouraged, to make picks while the clock stops. Please make use of the robust Fantrax draft room and set a draft queue. You can slice and dice the queue many ways, please read the help details in the draft room. The draft is only 10 rounds. For those with poor memories, rounds 11-13 are prospect picks and for this draft should be ignored. As this is the first draft with these additional picks, we are experimenting and learning as we go. There may be a bump or two.
Please make any final trades and any player drops necessary ahead of the draft. Most importantly, have fun.
Ask any questions here.

Just a reminder the draft begins this Saturday, make your final preparations now.
-During the draft there are no drops. Make space now. -No trades are allowed during the draft. Make your pre draft trades by Thursday to allow time for them to process. -NEW for this year is a maximum of 3 goalies on your NHL team. Mods will be watching. -Teams can exceed the cap by 10% but I recommend not doing so or limiting your use. Most often GMs who go over the cap run into trouble. Avoiding it is the best plan.
-We are drafting using the Fantrax draft room. This gives you tons of control over your draft queue and auto-drafting options. -Fantrax will email you when you are on deck, and when it’s your turn to pick. -GMs will appreciate a quick turn around when it is your turn. Please use auto-draft as much as you are comfortable. Mods can also take lists.
Happy drafting.

And no players will occupy your IR slots. You can draft players currently on IR, but they must be on your bench

And no players will occupy your IR slots. You can draft players currently on IR, but they must be on your bench or roster. Bench, as per the CBA: Fair play rules No IR players can be placed on the starting roster/dressed. IR players are those denoted by the red flag with white cross, aka “Swiss flag”.

That’s not really an issue in the off-season though since their status likely changes before puck drop. That’s more of a regular season issue.

I can understand the reason for wanting to start early.. but we need to give more notices guys.. Aug 19th and doing on the 26th is too short of time. Also If we could least ask around and take a poll on preferences before setting the draft date. I am not ready and I also have family stuff going on. If we could make changes to the process of these kind of decisions for the future it would be greatly appreciate. thanks all the best in draft in everyone

Oh come on. We haven’t known the precise date but we know that it happens around Labour Day every year. We’ve had all summer to prepare.

We hear this from you every year no matter what we do. There are no perfect dates for everyone which is why we start with 12 hr windows, and with the clock stoppage overnight, that window really turns into more like 24. The entire draft won’t happen in a day. Your first pick isn’t until something like 32, I’d be rather surprised if you end up having to make your pick Sunday.
I know about family stuff, that’s precisely the reason I set the draft to get rolling now while I can ensure it runs smoothly instead of when I’m in another continent dealing with a father in law going through his hopefully final chemo treatments. Take the time you need, I don’t pick until the 4th round or later so I can help with your first few picks.

The 12 hour picks should help those that may be busy during the day. I think the start time is fine, gives everyone an opportunity to make sure they have time to pick their guy. We’ve had all summer to do our homework and precious drafts to look on for strategy.

I dont mind date changes... no big deal... but even a two-week notice would of been better than one, which is my point. It is far more professional and helpful for everyone. This move runs the risk of having managers unavailable compared to letting managers change their schedules. If I am alone that these quick changes should be avoided then I am okay with that but I dont see why they consistently need to happen tbh

Your welcome to take my message however you please but the message was not personal but sharing an observation I have noticed....I was just expressing that planning for dates allows people to be organized and know whats going on. As someone who runs a hockey league as well with two other commissioners, it is difficult but remaining consistent and giving lots of notice has maximized involvement and created an active leage. But I am not going to lose any sleep over this but I do think consideration to give notice and setting a date is a good practice. SB out..

You seem to be missing a date was set, and a decision was made to change it for various practical reasons. There was a discussion on Discord, and I heard no objections. Again, we’re doing something new this year on Fantrax and I felt the “professional” thing to do was be here for it in case it went off the rails. I guess I should have left the date as is and just shrugged my shoulders if there were issues and left it to others to deal with. Or if guys were scrambling to get under the cap or make post draft trades the last week of September not cared.

I am happy you changed the date. We have new minor spots to fill this year. As well as an extra round in tomorrows draft. Free agency is going to get flooded when it opens up. And trading will go wild for a bit too. We need time for this. And there was a good couple days discussion on this topic, with many of the GMs on discord. We all wanted this. Good move! 😀

I can appreciate that there was a conversation on Discord and it would work for some of the GMs. but I can be pretty sure not all of the managers were a part of this discussion. Conversations and suggested changes should be put on the HTN for those managers like myself who are not on Discord or have the time to keep track of the flowing messages that come through it. I understand and even encourage making changes. but I don't understand why it wasn't done two weeks ago or earlier this month which is was I was suggesting that changes be made with more time to make these times work instead of just getting the majority and screwing the managers that can't make the dates. I am sure there are some managers that would appreciate this position given how much work and time it takes to prepare and stay competitive. Simply asking that draft date changes be done with at least two weeks or more notice..

Apologies for wanting to be here for the draft to make sure it runs fine. Apologies for my wife who didn’t have details earlier about when her father’s colon cancer treatments were taking place and didn’t book flights earlier. Apologies for wanting to be there with her instead of staying back for the good of the league.
Apologies for ruining everyone’s draft. Very unprofessional of me.

Consider my public apology for using the word "professional" since it came across wrong and I did not mean to make it personal. I wish a speedy recovery for the family. Good luck with the draft, and best wishes on your time with your family!

Look, everyone’s schedules aren’t going to align. Never. That’s about as common as a solar eclipse around these parts.
If someone is unable to be there during the draft, send me your list. I promise I’ll draft the player you want in the order which you sent it to me.

Nah. He’s unprofessional. He’s unemployed/retired, sits around in his house coat all day and watches porn. That’s pretty much the gold standard for unprofessional.

It’s retirement…unofficially at least. And it’s wonderful. Do it as soon as you can. You’ll never be this young again.
