Chicago trades - Owen Power(d)buf
Tor trades - Barzal(c)nyi - knies(lw)tor - liligren(d)tor - 2026 UFA 1st rounder
Toronto trades a mit full because he sees Power as a future hall of famer, only getting better with every game. Imagine if he had forwards to pass the puck too!!! I wasn’t too happy about barzals big contract. Freeing up that money, gives me options. Trading Knies hurts. But I had to give to get…. We went back and forth on this, and settled on this deal. Thanks for the trade, Chicago!!!

Thank you to all the GMs who submitted offers on Power. I appreciate all the great packages put together and the talks.
I'm sending Power to Toronto. Dan was pretty serious about Power from the start and we had some good back and forth.
I'm looking to compete the next 2 years or so and I wanted a forward keeper to do that. Barzal helps me with that. Bonus points for having center eligibility, a position I'm weak at. Minus points for his huge contract but whatever.
I'm bullish on Knies in Toronto. Liljegren helps fill in a bit that will be lost with Power.
Thanks Dan for the talks and trade. Hope Power developes into a beast for you.

Hi. Toronto again, To fully explain my offering. Barzal has a $9,200,000 price tag. He’s good, but that money can be spent on other things. I was thinking of grabbing from free agency someone like pageau for $5mill. To replace him. I lose maybe 25-30 points on the year, and I still have $4mill. Not a big loss. I gain power, I have to drop a dman. I don’t see Chicago going for Mahura, so I offer him Liligren. Lil, is a good dman. He was a 1st rounder. But in Toronto he will never get a chance to step up, Because they have way too many high skilled over paid, 30 year olds, on the blue line. I gave up Knies…. That hurt. You got to give to get. Redhawk12, gave me a short list of players he was interested in. He wanted all my younger upper end talent. I put Knies forward. Yaeh Knies has a lot of hype right now. But it’s a guessing game. I doubt this trade would have happened without this piece… And the 2026 1st rounder, we eventually agreed on. I really like Power. I know he cost $8.5 next year. But with him and Sanderson as my two young guys on d to build around. I’ll be solid in d, for the next 15 years! I don’t know if this helps a bit in my reasoning. Dan - tor

I do feel like I got a very good return here for Power. I made him available publicly and had some good discussions with a few GMs. Obviously Dan's offer was the best one so we made the trade.
My rationale is..I'm trying to compete, and when I made Power available I just wanted the best return. I told all GMs who inquired the same thing. As the offers came in, I focused in on getting a productive forward plus depth, either in the form of other roster pieces, prospects or picks. I wanted that because I'm giving up a guy with very high potential, signed to a reasonable long-term contract playing a position where points and salary can become a bit too disproportionate.
Also, I have Vas currently on IR, I used his cap hit primarily on Drew Doughty, who's not a keeper. Now that I get Barzal, who is a keeper, I'm going to have to make some decisions regarding the depth I have when Vas comes back, ie. Rust, Duclair and Freddy Gaudreau. Chances are I lose these for very little since there's just no market for them and GMs know I'm in cap trouble. Not like I'm coming out way ahead at the end of the day. I'm just trying to accumulate as many points as I can, while I can.
with this specific trade, Dan's not doing an extreme tank, there's hasn't been any collusion here or ever between Toronto and I, and we came up with this deal after quite a bit of back and forth. I feel like we're both pretty happy with the deal.

I don’t think collusion was ever considered by anyone.

The mod team has received feedback from voters and reviewed the trade. The consensus amongst the voters and mod team is, in general, Toronto has paid far more than is reasonable. Power is a good Dman however giving up a top 6 forward, a top prospect forward, a solid D prospect and a 1st is far too much for a dman.
Barzal is established as a .8-.9 PPG forward with potential to be a PPGer. Power had differing valuations from 40s-60s. Some felt there was more potential whereas others felt Dahlin holds him back as Dahlin will get 1st PP time. Liljgren is mostly viewed as a high 30 point D with potential for more. Knies is viewed as a top prospect with PPG potential. A 1st is a 1st.
All four assets for just Power is too rich and we note gathered votes very quickly. We have provided specific guidance to the GMs with two options to rework this deal.

Revised Trade:
To TOR: Owen Power 2024 2nd PP (LAK) 2024 2nd PP (WPG)
To CHI: Mathew Barzal Timothy Liljegren Matthew Knies
Dan and I have reworked the deal. We've taken out the 1st UFA to Chicago and added two PPs going back to Toronto.

Mods reviewed this prior to announcing and agreed this was a more even trade. Chicago still ends up on the better end, but it's better.
As a result, we'll be revising and pushing the trade through today.
Thanks all who were part of the process.
