To Wash:
2024 1st pp Buf 2024 1st UFA Buf Varlamov Gudbranson
To Buffalo:
S. Walker Jarry Joseph Livingstone 2024 3rd UFA Min
Rationale:
I trade away a young, cost-controlled, volume, top 10 starter, and two potential keepers for two very good picks. These picks will help me next year as I will struggle to compete with several juggernauts. The players I’m receiving are just bodies/cap dumps. The irony is that by sending productive players I am diluting the picks I receive here. Nevertheless, I am hopeful they will help. Thanks for the talks Moon. You seem to be building forward well.

I was trying to grab a starting goalie and depth defenseman for a 1st that I have “extra” in return for a backup goalie and a defenseman that was too pricey. I received a 3rd FA back for my 1st to balance.

This trade has been reworked into two separate trades:
Trade 1:
Jarry Livingstone
For
2024 1st UFA (Buf) Varlamov
Rationale: I’m trading a top 10 overal Goalie for the UFA pick of similar value. Moon can’t have 4 goalies per the CA and is sending his bench goalie in return for a promising D prospect.
Trade 2:
Matthiew Joseph Sean Walker 2024 3rd UFA (Min)
For
2026 1st pp
Rationale: Buffalo wanted to upgrade his bench with younger cheaper players. Both are bubble keepers for me. But nevertheless promising, especially when rights itself again and Walker being on Col can be further leveraged before the deadline if he chooses. The 1st is far enough out that it is likely a mid-late round pick at best in two years’ time.

I meant to get this out sooner, but had other stuff going on earlier. Just for transparency, the guidance from the mods gave was:
Consensus from the voters was moving both an early first FA pick AND a first prospect pick was the main sticking point. Voters pointed out the 1st prospect pick is in a lottery position and could end up being first overall. Based on Moon’s comment in the trade thread the mods weren’t sure if he realized that was a lottery pick. When I contacted Moon, that was indeed the case. As a newer GM he didn’t realize there was a lottery.
Guidance from the mods is a first prospect pick is overkill in a trade like this. Moon’s first free agent pick, currently 4th, would result in a starting goalie. It was also brought up Jarry on a declining team. Remove the 1st prospect pick and replace with a later round and rework the other pieces moving if desired.

Joseph is having a good season and I hope he does the same in the future, I am happy with my prospects and still have several picks this year. Taking a shot on Joseph.
Thanks for sticking in there with me, it was a process to get these trades passed.
