I think the Hawks should agreed to eat salary and trade Kane, Toews, Keith and the dead carcass of Seabrook if possible. I understand it will not be easy, or maybe even possible. But it should be explored.
I mean this season you have two AHL goalies and significant injuries to your forward core (Shaw, Nylander, Dach...). Other than DeBrincat, none of the future of this team are signed beyond two seasons. Free up cap space, tank, collect picks and young guys...go full rebuild and suck for two years.
If you pick up significant portion of the contracts and take on bad contracts in return (that expire in 1-2 years), teams might be tempted to take an aging veteran to put them over the top.
Oh, and play the hell out of Pius Suter or find other European free agents and see what they can do in North America...just saying.

You could probably maximize value with Kane and Toews, but my guess is they ride out their contracts (as well as Seabrook) while they rebuild the core. They lucked out on the lottery and picked a great up-and-coming center in Kirby Dach, Boqvist still looks good, and they can unload the Seabrook contract in a few years when the term is a little lower. Right now it does not make sense.
Stay the course. Kane and Toews, imo, are going to take a discount to remain with the team and hope that the young guys + other players along the way can bring the Hawks back to a contending team.
EDIT: their biggest hole will be a top pairing defender (Keith is getting old), and goaltending. Goaltending doesn't cost much (compared to a skater's value), and I believe they have some strong D prospects in their system.

The problem is timing.
The four vets have three year contracts. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, will need to resign under a flat cap in the next two years. Meaning $33m of your cap is gone on four aging guys while you try to resign Kubalik, Dach, Nylander, Boqvist, Zadorov, Lankinen, Suter, etc, etc to their raises when you do not have the funds to do it.
You will likely start losing some of your young core if you try to keep the vets to the end of their current contracts.
EDIT: The only young guys signed to 2023 are DeBrincat and Mitchell.

I doubt Toews is ever moved. Kane maybe. But yeah, those cap hits are near impossible to move in the next two years.
The rest, well Chicago may have to sleep in the bed they made.

The NMCs would be tough. I’m sure the owners have a Seabrook voodoo doll that they jab every night hoping he’s get some sort of career ending ailment...or water board under some fountain of youth. He’s beyond immovable.

It's interesting that you would start a thread specifically about my team but ok.
The only two huge salaries I have are Rantanen and Burns. Rantanen I'm planning on keeping long term. Burns...if he bounces back I might be able to trade him. The only other big salary I have is O'Reilly, and at 7.5M I think it's manageable. I think prospects like Lafreniere, Cozens, Krebs and Caufield will help me transition to a competitive team, hopefully soon.
Oh wait you're talking about real life. My bad.

I think your team is in FAR better shape than the real life Hawks.

Now Toews is out for an unknown amount of time. I think Patrick Kane will be traded this year. It makes no sense to even try to compete this season and Kane could still fetch a good return if he agrees to waive his NMC.
He would be the easiest to move and get the biggest return. The others are a harder sell.
I hope Toews is okay though. I have always liked and respected the man.
