6.0 Off-season
6.1 Keepers
Every off-season, as a GM you will lose players to free agency. GMs will keep the following:
Seven (7) forwards, any position
Three (3) defensemen
Two (2) utility skater (either a F or D)
One (1) goaltender
Keepers must be designated by a specified date each year, typically after the opening of NHL free agency. Please ensure you post your keepers on the message board AND make your keeper selections within Fantrax. Also note in Fantrax minor league players you wish to retain must also be checked or you will lose them.
6.2 Prospect Draft
In every off-season, there will be a prospect entry draft. The draft is four (4) rounds in length.
The draft order will be determined by the draft lottery using the results from the real NHL lottery. The bottom 8 teams who do not make the playoffs will be represented by the real NHL team corresponding to their position. Last place team = last place team in the NHL, 2nd last team = 2nd last team in the NHL, etc. The order of the first round of the draft will be determined by the real-life NHL lottery. The remaining rounds will follow the standings of finish as per the season standings.
The draft may initially begin via email with picks posted on the forum site. Should it be deemed necessary due to time, the draft will change to a timed draft for each pick. If during the timed draft the GM misses their selection or selects an ineligible player, the draft will continue and the GM will select when possible. The late GM can only select from available players, they cannot claim a player taken after the GM's correct timeslot. The prospect draft is a straight draft for each round starting with the draft spot for the lowest finishing team in the regular season (24th place) or the team(s) who won the lottery.
Prospect draft picks may be traded prior to the official start of the draft. GMs may not trade players during the draft. Only prospect eligible players may be selected in this draft.
No prospect promotions, demotions, or drops are allowed during the draft. PENALTIES: Dropped prospects will be added back to the GM's team. The promoted or demoted prospect will be removed from the team and added to the free agent pool. Prospects will be ineligible for the remainder of the prospect draft. GMs selecting ineligible prospects will have the prospect removed and will lose the pick.
Should a team obtain more picks than open positions the GM will need to trade players, picks, or both to free up open prospect slots before the draft begins. If the GM does not have a free prospect slot, the pick will be passed. If a team selects a prospect and does not have an available slot, the prospect will be dropped. If picks are traded GMs must obtain future value for the pick. A GM cannot trade for a pick later in the same draft. (If the GM cannot use a 2nd round pick, he cannot trade for a pick in the 3rd round of the same draft). PENALTY: If trades like this occur, it will be viewed as a form of collusion. Both GMs will lose the traded picks and the trading activity of the GMs will be reviewed by the moderators. The moderators may enforce additional penalties including to removal of both GMs from the league.
Remaining players that go undrafted, may be picked up via free agency during the season or in the free-agent draft.
6.3 NHL Free Agent Draft
All available players during the summer (included prospects not selected in the prospect draft) will be put into a dispersal draft. The order of the draft is determined with the last-place team at the end of the HTN season selecting first through to the top finishing team. Ties are broken by the team with the most goals first, then the team with the most goalie wins.
The draft will be held on the forum site and will be a timed draft with specific time windows for each pick. One round will be planned per day. GMs will post their claim on the forum and then select their player on Fantrax. If possible we will use the Fantrax draft tool. The time limits on Fantrax will not be utilized except to alert GMs they have the next pick. If the GM misses their selection, the system will auto-draft a player either from the GM'S shortlist or the main Fantrax list sorted by the player with the most points in the previous year. The free-agent draft will be a straight draft for each round starting with the draft spot for the lowest finishing team in the regular season (24th place). Draft picks may NOT be traded during the draft. Prospect eligible players may be selected however they must be placed on the NHL team. After the round of the day is complete, GMs may continue to pick but time limits will not be affected. At the conclusion of the draft, any GM can sign free agents to round out their 23 man roster.
During the draft, teams may exceed the NHL salary cap by no more than 10%. If the GM acquires a player who places the team over the cap by more than 10% the GM will be required to drop that player and select another. The offending GM will only be able to select from available players.
GMs are free to make NHL player drops up until the start of the UFA draft. No player promotions, demotions, or drops are allowed during the draft. PENALTIES: Dropped players will be added back to the GM's team, promotions/demotions will be undone.
6.4 Unclaimed Players
GMs are responsible for claiming their players and keeping track of their rosters. Should a GM fail to claim a player through the keeper rollover process or through one of the drafts the player will be considered available should the player be unclaimed before the next event starts:
- For keeper rollovers, unclaimed prospects are considered available once the prospect draft starts.
- NHL players are considered available once the free-agent draft starts and drafted but unclaimed prospects are considered available once the free-agent draft starts.
- All players will be considered available once the roster free is lifted in September.
The moderator team takes no responsibility for claiming players on behalf of a GM or informing the league players are available. GMs are expected to do their own due diligence.
