To Toronto: Mitch Marner Joe Pavelski 2021 2nd UFA (36th OA, MTL)
**2024 4th UFA (LA) 2021 3rd PP (NSH, 54th OA)
To LA: Claude Giroux Dylan Holloway 2021 1st PP (TOR, 11th OA) 2022 1st Rd UFA (TOR) Tony DeAngelo Nathan Bastian 2022 4th UFA (CGY)
**Pick will be traded back to LA once another deal goes through.
PART 2:
To Toronto: 2021 4th Rd UFA (CAR)
To LA: 2024 4th Rd UFA (LA) Rationale: The LA Kings have had Mitch Marner in their organization since he was drafted 4th overall in 2015 in the HTN Prospect Draft. We can thank Mitch Marner for being one of the biggest reasons of consecutively getting this team into the playoffs every year for the past 5 years. We made it far one year (2020), making it to the conference finals, but fell short. Instead of keeping him around while this team is in a state of a retool, we felt it would be best to sell him to a team destined for playoffs. Without further ado, Marner is now a Leaf both in real life and now HTN. LA got an offer (a blockbuster) from Toronto that benefits both sides with the direction they’re going. Joe Pavelski keeps coming back to me, but I keep sending him away. He’s also a guy I’ve had on my squad for long periods of time, but it’s time we part ways yet again while he chases a cup here on HTN. Thanks for the talks TM!

Toronto….
They say the team that trades for the best player, is the team that wins the trade. Toronto did that buy getting Marner. And as a leaf fan, it is great to grab him. But as l.a. said, it will take an over payment to get him…. I took a hit on the pp draft, swapping 1st rounder, for 3rd. But as I said in another trade, I don’t have much interest in this years class of rookies, cause they missed a year of development, making it hard to tell the difference between good and great players…. I swapped UFA pics. A 1st round for a 2nd round. Not that big a deal…. I also swapped giroux for pavelski. Pavelski is a little older, but he was much mor productive last year than giroux. Giroux for the last 5 years, had consistently become less and less of a points scorer. Pavelski is also a cheaper option…. I traded away a minor in holloway. He was a 1st rounder in real life, that I scored last year in the second round. He promising, but one in the bag with marner, is better than two in a bush. I gave up a 23 year old graduating 3rd liner. No big deal…. And then their was the gamble. At the time the trade was made, deAngelo was a $4,8million locker room problem hold out, who sat the whole year out with the nyr. His contract was bought out. At this time l.a. was gambling on him getting a second chance. After we agreed he signed with Carolina, for $1million. Congrats on this gamble. When evaluating this trade, deAngelo should be looked upon as the $4.8mill cap hit, problem child he was at that time.

hey guys, i know i am new in this leage and still working out the price tags points for this .. I can understand the rational of why LA wanted to move Marner but I dont understand alot of the pieces that were involved in this deal for the benefit of LA.. 1) giroux being involved in this deal has one of the bigger pieces ( maybe just for cap purposes) but if LA is going to rebuild why would he take giroux back? and not a pick or a higher end prospect? 2) why is LA giving picks back in this deal.. Marner alone should warrent what he got back since he is a top 6 fantasy player ( which I would of asked for double for him lol).. This deal looks like a homerun for one side.. and if LA gets lucky the 1st round PP turns out and hollaway turns into a star to make this deal a fair deal.. I suggest this deal be reconstructed to be fair for both sides..but thats just my take with the desire to keep trades at a fair level.

Well, this is why there’s two days to object trades, in case there are any concerns that arise. I appreciate the honesty and willingness to speak up.
I took Giroux because he can either be flipped, or he can be kept for next season with a new deal at a lower cost. Holloway is a top 10 prospect in the league, DeAngelo is a good defenseman at only 1m (will be flipped), and I got a 1st UFA in a different year, along with Bastian and another decent UFA. Maybe I could’ve gotten more if I put Marner on the block better. But Toronto came in right away with Giroux, Holloway, and 2021 1st rd Pp, I made him offer a little more with giving up Pavs, who is old, for some younger cost-controlled players and upgraded picks.
Maybe that’s still not enough, but if 4 other GMs agree with you then this deal will have to get reconstructed or cancelled.

I think it was pretty fair, and actually thought LA might have had the edge in this one, given the value of a cheap point producing Dman and the early pp.

Prospect picks are valued insanely in our league, for better or for worse. The other thing is that cap space is also incredibly valuable, which brings down Marner's value slightly.
I don't love this deal for LA, but that's mostly because of my personal valuation on the prospect and picks he got in return. And I don't like DeAngelo.
But in terms of value, I feel it's fair.

Also, I find with UFA picks, once you get out of say the top 10-15 picks in the first round, their value decreases significantly. Once we get to our UFA draft, I think you'll see that there's really not much to pick from.

For those that say I got a big advantage in this trade, I just want to point out, l.a. laid most of the ground work for this trade. I said I wanted marner, and asked what he wanted for him. He proposed this trade, with me mentioning a couple of no touchables. I heckled and squeezed an extra UFA 4th rounder. And we are both very happy with what we came up with. He’s on a rebuild, and I want to push this year.

I feel like Marner would have had a lot more value if not for almost making 11m. It’s hard to ice a good lineup with 20m tied to two players (Marner and Makar). Makar forced my hand a little. Makar > Marner in terms of who I wanted to keep.

Considering the crappy return I had to settle for when Ovechkin and Stone got squeezed out by their cap hits I think FFF did okay on this deal. There will be more deals like this and worse as the non-indexed cap structure of this league gets worse.

Added part 2 of the 4th round pick swapping. I missed that TM had already accepted the deal yesterday. Easy swap, he gets a pick in this draft.
