2.0 Rosters
2.1 Team Size
Each team will consist of a minimum of 20 players and a maximum of 23 players on their NHL roster.
The roster will also contain a maximum of 18 players in the minor league.
2.2 Starting Line-Up
Each GM must ice a team with the following number of players designated in each category. Players must be active NHL players. No minor (green flag) or IR players may be active.
3 Centers
3 Left Wingers
3 Right Wingers
3 Forwards (any forward position)
6 Defensemen
2 Goaltenders
The remaining 3 reserve roster positions can be comprised of players in any position including minor league and IR players, but only 1 bench goaltender (NHL goalie limits are capped at a maximum of 3). If a team is not compliant, the team will not accumulate points until the issue is resolved. Fantrax will identify if a team is not compliant at the top of the team page and on the illegal roster page. The moderators may adjust the team if they suspect an illegal roster is intentional. Please see specific rules on fair play.
2.3 Eligible Major League Players
Any player who is or was NHL draft-eligible is permitted to be signed to the NHL squad. This includes UFA players and players who are under contract in another league (KHL, SEL, etc). No undrafted/unsigned player under the age of 20 as of Sept 30 at the start of the season is eligible.
During the offseason, a GM can elect to sign a UFA during the draft however the GM is taking a risk if the player is not signed by the start of the season he will not contribute. All unsigned players will be given a salary of $999,999 until such time as they are signed by a club. During the season unsigned players must be listed as reserve players. They can't be used to fill an active slot.
2.4 Injured Reserve Players
Teams may place up to 4 players on the Injured Reserve (IR) list provided the player is marked as IR eligible on Fantrax. A maximum of 2 goalies may be placed on IR. The replacement player may come from the team's minor players, the free agent/waiver pool or through trade. Players can only be placed on IR during the season, see off season IR usage. If a player is listed as IR by Fantrax, and he is in the free agent or waiver wire pool, he cannot be claimed and directly placed on IR. In order to claim an IR player, a team would need to have less than 23 active roster players and appropriate cap space. This is to prevent the hoarding of players in IR slots. Players listed on the IR can be traded.
Cap Considerations
- While on the IR list, the player's cap hit does not apply to the team's salary cap.
- The replacement player cannot result in a team exceeding the cap ceiling.
- The team does not have to remain above the cap floor while a player is on IR.
Returning to Action
When the injured player returns to action in the NHL, the IR player must return to active or reserve status or be dropped IMMEDIATELY. If the player is not removed from IR prior to the next weekly cutoff period, the team will lose the first available 2nd round prospect pick. Should the team have more than one selection in the round their own pick will be removed first. If the team has traded or lost their own pick, then the pick associated with the team lowest in the standings at the time of the infraction will be removed.
Off-season IR usage
From the end of the season until 5 days prior to the start of the season, no players can be placed on IR.
5 days before the season starts, any players designated on Fantrax as IR (red flag with a white or black cross) can be moved to an IR slot.
Fantrax settings will exclusively be followed. Admins will not move players down to IR regardless what external sources indicate. GMs are free to contact Fantrax through their feedback mechanism to lobby them.
2.5 Player Position Eligibility
Fantrax will be used to identify player position eligibility. No other sources will be used.
2.6 Prospect Pipeline – Minor League
Players obtained in the prospects draft or claimed via free agency are designated as minor league players within your team on Fantrax. A player is designated a prospect if he meets one of points 1 OR 2 below, as well as point 3 and 4:
1)The player was eligible for the NHL draft. No Junior, Bantam, Peewee, Timbits, or other underage players may be selected.
2) Is under contract by an NHL team, or the NHL team holds the rights to the player (e.g. the player is in a major junior, college, or European league)
3) As a skater, they have played in less than 40 NHL games, or as a goaltender, they have played in less than 20 NHL games in their NHL career.
4) Undrafted prospects must be 20 years old or older prior to Sept. 30th of each season.
Prospects must fall within the above parameters at the beginning of each season. The game statistics in Fantrax shall be used to identify games played. If a player passes the game threshold during a season they can remain in the prospect pipeline for that season until after the keeper deadline. If a prospect is picked up from the waiver wire prior to playing in the game where they would reach the games played threshold, they are eligible to be placed in the minors. Prior to the off-season prospect draft, the player must be promoted, waived, or traded.
2.7 Prospect Callups
GMs may freely promote and demote their prospect eligible players. The player may only be moved down to the minors assuming they are under the games played threshold. Should a player pass the game threshold during a scoring period (week) the player will no longer be prospect eligible.
Example: A prospect forward begins the season having played 25 NHL games. In November the prospect is called up to the NHL squad and score 4 goals in the next 4 games (29 total games played). The GM promotes the prospect to the NHL squad. Over the next 3 weeks, the prospect plays in 10 games (39 total games played). The following week, prior to the cutoff, the GM will have to decide to keep the prospect up with the NHL squad, thus promoting the prospect, or return the prospect to the minors.
GMs are free to promote/demote prospect eligible players at will up until the roster freeze before the final week of the season. At the roster freeze, for the remainder of the seasoning through to the keeper deadline, no player movement is allowed including prospect promotion/demotion. PENALTY: Promoting or demoting a prospect during the freeze will result in losing the prospect.
2.8 Emergency Prospect Callup
If due to multiple injuries, the GM cannot field a complete team of players from their NHL roster, the GM may call up a prospect from the minors on an emergency situation and send the player back down even if the prospect passes the 40 or 20 game mark. As soon as NHL roster players are healthy, the GM must place the player(s) back in the minors and active the NHL level player. If the player has passed the games played limit the GM is to notify the commissioner and/or co-commissioner to move the player down. PENALTY: Failure to demote the minor league player once the emergency situation ends will indicate the GM has decided to promote the player.
2.9 Off-Season Prospect Moves
From the roster freeze until the keeper declaration, no prospect promotions or demotions are allowed.
Forced Prospect Promotions
When keepers are declared, all forced promotions must be made. PENALTY: If the GM does not promote or drop the forced promotion the GM will either be removed the league or lose the forced promotion prospect(s). The form of punishment will be decided on by the mod team.
Lifting of Prospect Freeze
AFTER the keeper declaration deadline has passed GMs are free to promote/demote prospects up until the prospect draft starts. PENALTY: If a GM demotes a player who is no longer prospect eligible, the player will be removed from the team and added to the free-agent pool.
During the Prospect Draft
No promotions, demotions, or drops are allowed. Prospects cannot be promoted, demoted or dropped again until after the UFA draft. PENALTY: Dropped players will be added back to the GM's team. The promoted or demoted player will be removed from the team and added to the free-agent pool. The player will be ineligible for the prospect draft.
Teams may trade players during the draft however the player(s) must remain in the same squad either NHL or Minor. For example team A cannot trade a minor league player to team B and have team B promote the player to the NHL club. PENALTY: The promoted or demoted player will be removed from the team and added to the free-agent pool. The player will be ineligible for the prospect draft.
2.10 Games Played (GP) Quota
Teams must reach a minimum of 1300 combined games played by the end of the season.
Games will be calculated using the following parameters:
- Only the 20 active roster players for each week will be counted and added to the GP total.
- Reserve and minor league players for any given week do not count towards the GP total.
- Injury replacement players will count for the time period they are active.
- GP totals for players who are traded, dropped, or inactive will be retained for the weeks they were active.
Failure to meet the minimum games mark will result in a penalty to be assessed at the end of the season:
- The team is assessed a 50 point penalty plus, for each game under the minimum, 1 point added to their final point total at the end of the season.
- Any team under the minimum games will be ineligible for any prizes or playoffs for that year.
- The additional points will affect final standings for drafting purposes.
- The GM will be put on probation for the following season.
- GMs who fail to meet the GP quota for two years in a row will be removed from the league.
This quota will prevent teams from intentionally tanking throughout a year but gives the flexibility to a rebuilding team to have prospects and/or injured players on a team. There will be no limit on the amount of Red or Yellow flags a team can have at any given time but a team must reach this GP mark.
GP totals for each team can be found on your team roster page in Fantrax and selecting the "Min/Max" tab which will calculate the totals and pace. Note Fantrax calculates goalie game totals separately from skaters number so they can be easily added. Mods will be watching the GP Pace closely so please be aware of where your team's pace is throughout the year. Should the mods feel a team is severely under the GP quota, they will alert the GM and at their discretion remove the GM from the league for failure to comply.
