Hi Folks,
I am wondering about whether we can consider moving to an IR+ system. Teams seem reticent to add injured players to IR and leave them injured until it’s clear they will be out beyond the IR threshold, then they use IR retroactively. But that leaves GMs in the lurch. I’d like to ask the Mods to consider implementing IR+ for red or red-white flags.
Thoughts?

Yeah. I’d totally support that. NHL teams not putting players on the IR even though they’re out for weeks to months screws things in fantasy. I’ve had that happen a few times. I’d support allowing any red flags to be IR eligible to take the guess work out. That would be more or less self-policing. Guys who are competing aren’t likely to IR a star who is out short term, and if a tanker puts a short term guy in the IR he’ll have to activate him when he comes off … plus we have the GP minimum to prevent tankers from over-exploiting the IR list.
I’ve been in leagues that allowed any red flags to be put on the IR at the GMs discretion. It works okay. Better than not being able to IR a 7m contract for two months because the NHL team doesn’t IR him for whatever reason.

This is the fantrax note for the “Only players on the NHL Injured Reserve List may be moved to the Injured Reserve slot” toggle:
The league started with a desire to mimic the NHL in as many ways possible, but evolution is healthy. I would assume we would still require GMs to place players on their active roster before going to IR as a way to limit churning of red flagged players. Otherwise, I suspect this would get used as essentially additional roster spots. It may also have an impact on the more active GMs who would be able to jump on a player coming off red flag ahead of others.
DISCLAIMER: I’m taking the somewhat contrarian view just to get some thoughts on what potential impacts could be. I would support this, and other changes (like increasing IR spots, prospect spots or the cap escalator) if it makes things better for the league as a whole. My preference would not be water things down too much and make this an “easy league”. We’ve build the reputation that this is a tough league to win and I’d prefer to keep it that way.

I just wouldn’t want anyone abusing it for “day to day” injuries, but I guess it wouldn’t matter unless your player was in the lineup Monday.
I agree that it should be fixed if possible, as long as it doesn’t intervene with the difficulty of winning this league like FF said.

I don’t see how anyone can abuse day to day injuries much with weekly settings.
The downside of getting screwed by not being able to bench a 7-8m cap hit that’s out for two months is greater than someone using the IR to hide an extra player for a week or two. And so what if he does. Sooner probably rather then later the player will have to get activated or dropped. And if there’s blatant abuse we still have the fair play rule to fall back on. Not being able to IR someone who is out for a long period because the NHL team won’t do it is something that’s out of our control and unduly punitive to the fantasy GM. The downside of not opening up the IR criteria is far greater imo than being overly anal about it.

Mimicking the NHL went out the window when we contracted to 24 teams. Trying to adhere to that goal too firmly causes greater problems imo, in this and many areas. It’s not possible to mimic the NHL.

One other point … NHL teams only LTIR a player if they need to go over the cap to replace the guy. Otherwise there’s no benefit to the NHL team as they do not accrue cap space unless they’re over the cap. So in the case of a guy like Kylington, he could have been LTIRed all last season. The Flames didn’t need the cap space to replace him though, so he wasn’t LTIR’ed. Anyone wanting to own Kylington therefore was screwed. They had to allot a reserve slot for the whole season or drop him.
Which makes adhering to the NHL office LTIR list as the sole criteria for accessing the IR in our leagues punitive to fantasy GMs.
